The durability of motor oil and then the change interval are influenced by numerous factors and it is not easy to determine optimal mileage for a specific means of transport or a machine. The manufacturer proposes a maximum limit, but it is not always suitable since operating conditions influence the process significantly. Using FTIR spectrometry and analytical ferrography methods we evaluated used motor oils collected from older types of ZETOR tractors. Change intervals were extended for most tested oil fills. The analysis results showed that when the tractors were exposed to a considerable everyday load during autumn tasks, the lubrication and friction processes in their motors were affected negatively which resulted in increased wear. Therefore it is not advisable to extend the change interval as proposed by the ZETOR manufacturer.

This work presents the potentiality of partial least squares (PLS) regression associated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR spectrometry) for detecting penetration of diesel fuel into the mineral engine oil SAE 15W-40 in the concentration range from 0 % to 9.5 % (w/w). As a best practice has proven FTIR-PLS model, which uses the data file in the spectral range 835 -688 cm −1 .The quality of the model was evaluated using the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) and cross validation (RMSECV). A correlation coefficient R = 0.999 and values of RMSEC, RMSECV were obtained 0.11 % and 0.38 % respectively. After the calibration of the FTIR spectrometer, the contamination engine oil with diesel fuel could be obtained in 1 -2 min per sample.

In the present paper, we have investigated the tribological properties and microstructure of the used gear oil theoretically and experimentally. The deterioration process of the in-service gear lubricant oils was also discussed. The viscosity and microstructure of oils running different mileages were analyzed by viscometer and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. In addition, the friction and wear behaviors of the friction pair of the GCr15 steel ball and disc were investigated using a ball on disc tribometer under different mileages' gear oils lubrication conditions. These techniques give reproducible and reliable data with which to evaluate the severity of deterioration process of oils. The objective of this work is to understand the deterioration process of gear oil and analyze the influence of deterioration on the performance and microstructure of lubricant oils used in gear box. Possible explanations of deterioration process as well as its influence on friction and wear behaviors are also discussed. The results reveals the tribological properties of used oils depended on strongly the microstructure and its deterioration process of oil.
