Application of Cellulases in the Process of Finishing

Abstract: Cellulases are enzymes that are used for the surface modifi cations of cellulosic materials primarily during fi nishing. It is a multi-component enzymatic system which hydrolyzes cellulose chains, on the surface of the fi bres, to glucose. During their applications in the fi nishing of textiles, surface fi bres are removed and the surfaces of the treated textiles become smooth. The most important application is in the processing of denim for providing special eff ects without signifi cant fabric loss of streng… Show more

“…As celulases têm sido usadas em lavagem de jeans para obtenção de efeito desgastado e para clarear a cor das peças jeans índigo (stone wash), antes com o uso de pedra-pomes, por meio de abrasão ou desgaste, com danos aos equipamentos e poluição das roupas -bolsos cheios de areia -. Tornavam os efluentes mais poluentes e a operação era cara e demorada com uso de água em larga escala [45,46].…”

“…Many clothes are given a washing action to provide them a somewhat worn appearance, such as stone-washing of denim jeans, which causes the blue denim to fade due to the pumice stones. This ancient method has some drawbacks, including difficulties in removing pumice residue from denim clothing, harm to the machinery and clothing, dust in the washing equipment, and ecological damage [106]. The use of pumice stone has decreased or has been entirely removed in the industry of textile due to the introduction of cellulase enzymes.…”

“…46 Later, the process was slightly improved by the use of malt extract and further modification with animal and bacterial amylases paved the path for enzyme technology in industry. 47,48 Unil the 1980s, amylases were the only enzymes applied in textile processing. 5 In the late 1980s, cellulases were introduced in de-pilling and de-fuzzing of cellulose-based fabrics.…”

“…5 In the late 1980s, cellulases were introduced in de-pilling and de-fuzzing of cellulose-based fabrics. 48 Since then, the role of enzymes in textile processing kept growing. Today enzyme technology has been realised as a powerful tool in various textile-processing steps and can indeed be used in virtually all of the textile manufacturing steps, from fibre and fabric processing to effluent treatment and even laundering.…”
