The primary goal of this research is to lower the hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) concentration that has occurred from the growth of the tannery industry. As a result, the potential for heavy metal concentration is increasing day by day. Industrial effluent containing Cr (VI) contributes significantly to water pollution. Chromium hexavalent ion (Cr (VI)) in wastewater is extremely hazardous to the environment. It is critical to address such a condition using activated carbon derived from biomass. Adsorption is one of the most successful methods for removing hexavalent chromium from wastewater. Treated wastewater has no substantial environmental contamination consequences. The ash content, moisture content, volatile matter content, and fixed carbon content of wet coffee husk were 3.51, 10.85, 68.33, and 17.31, respectively. The physicochemical properties of coffee husk-based activated carbon (CHBAC) obtained during experimentation were pH, porosity, the yield of CHBAC, bulk density, point of zero charges, and specific surface area of 5.2, 58.4 percent, 60.1 percent, 0.71 g/mL, 4.19, and 1396 m2/g, respectively, indicating that CHBAC has a higher capacity as an adsorbent medium. For optimization purposes, the parameters ranged from pH (0.3–3.7), dose (2.3–5.7) g , and contact time (0.3–3.7) hr. The quadratic models were chosen for optimization, and the p value for the model was significant since it was less than 0.05, but the lack of fit model was inconsequential because it was more than 0.05. The optimum adsorption obtained with numerical optimization of Cr (VI) was 97.65 percent. This was obtained at a pH of 1.926, a dose of 4.209 g/L, and a contact time of 2.101 hours. This result was observed at a pH of 1.93, a dosage of 4.2 g/L, and a contact duration of 2.1 hours. The desirability obtained during numerical optimization was 1. Coffee husk-based activated carbon has a bigger surface area, and it has a stronger ability to absorb hexavalent chromium from tannery wastewater effluents.

The current study focuses on microwave‐assisted zinc oxide quantum dots synthesis (ZnO‐QDs) from zinc oxide bionanocomposite (ZnO‐BC) preparation. The novelty lies in the preparation of ZnO‐QDs, since the natural elements present in ZnO‐BC itself acted as a surface penetration enhancer without using any chemical agent. Under ultraviolet (UV) light ZnO‐QDs emitted a blue glow, confirming the fluorescence property. Using Box–Behnken design, the experimental factors of ZnO‐QDs were optimized, yielding a positive response of 350 nm absorbance and these results also matched with the UV‐visible spectroscopy characterization studies of ZnO‐QDs. Using Escherichia coli, the antibacterial activity of ZnO‐BC in comparison to ZnO‐QDs was determined using the well diffusion method and an inhibition zone ranging from 11 to 23 mm and in the broth assay the OD values were reduced by almost seven and 10 times for ZnO‐BC and ZnO‐QDs, respectively, when compared to the control (untreated). The antibacterial activity demonstrated that our newly prepared BC and its QDs have superior activity when compared to the standard antibiotics such as ampicillin. This type of nanomaterial can be used as a new bioactive natural material with light‐assisted activity for antibacterial coatings in the manufacture of personal protective equipment.

Natural organic matter in waters varies in different fractions. To better understand the removal of different fractions by a magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin and the mechanism behind it, this study investigated adsorption kinetics, equilibrium and thermodynamics of humic acid (HA) fractions with different hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties and molecular weights on MIEX resin through a series of batch experiments. MIEX resin can effectively remove approximately 40% of hydrophilic and 30% of hydrophobic HA components, as well as approximately 44% of molecular weight (MW) <10 kDa to some degree. The removal efficiency of HA fractions by MIEX resin reduced with the increase of pH from 6 to 9. Adsorption kinetics of different HA fractions on MIEX resin fitted the pseudo-second-order model well. With the increase of MW of HA from <1 kDa to >10 kDa, the time to reach adsorption equilibrium reduced from 180 to 120 min. It took more time for the hydrophilic fractions (140 min) to reach the equilibrium than for hydrophobic HA fractions (120 min). The Sips model fitted the adsorption equilibrium data of HA fractions on MIEX resin well. It was revealed that the adsorption of HA fractions on MIEX resin was spontaneous, endothermic and an entropy driven process, and the chemisorption might dominate the adsorption of HA components on MIEX resin. This study is of great significance to the design of magnetic ion exchange resin reactors and the optimization of operational parameters for the removal of natural organic matter with different hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties and molecular weights in different water sources.
