Application of Blockchain and Internet of Things to Ensure Tamper-Proof Data Availability for Food Safety

Abstract: Food supply chain plays a vital role in human health and food prices. Food supply chain inefficiencies in terms of unfair competition and lack of regulations directly affect the quality of human life and increase food safety risks. This work merges Hyperledger Fabric, an enterprise-ready blockchain platform with existing conventional infrastructure, to trace a food package from farm to fork using an identity unique for each food package while keeping it uncomplicated. It keeps the records of business transacti… Show more

“…We think that the adoption of BC‐based traceability systems could make the agrifood supply chains more prone to use also other digital tools favoring the adoption of other emerging technologies (big data, robotics, Internet of Things, RFID, NFC, hyperspectral imaging, etc.) that could allow an higher automation of the food supply processes, enhanced with full transparency and traceability (Feng, 2017; Iftekhar, Cui, Hassan, & Afzal, 2020).…”

“…Some deal with the issue of personal data ownership on the cloud storage platform [14,15]. Other DApps include supply chain application [16,17], insurance application [18], Internet of Things (IoT) with blockchain [19,20], game application [21], and secondary radio spectrum trade [22]. Our system focuses on data recording, and this type of application is similar to the application of product biography or supply chain.…”
