Application of averaging techniques to traffic flow theory

Abstract: Real traffic data are very versatile and are hard to explain with the so‐called standard fundamental diagram. A simple microscopic model can show that the heterogeneity of traffic results in a reduced mean flow and that the reduction is proportional to the density variance.
