Application of atomic force microscopy methods for testing the surface parameters of coatings of medical implants

Abstract: Abstract-Atomic force microscopy methods are used to study calcium phosphate coatings that are formed on surfaces of various materials, which are used in medicine, by radio frequency magnetron sputtering of a hydroxyapatite target. The roughness parameters and values of the surface potentials of metal, polymer, and hybrid substrates are determined in a semicontact regime. Calcium phosphate coatings increase the roughness of surfaces of polymer and metal materials, thus presenting a stimu lating factor for the … Show more

“…High accuracy, lack of any limitation in study of many surfaces in various medium conditions, lack of need for sample preparation in most cases, high measuring speed, development of 3D images, and potentials for the study of various surface features have made a growing interest for application of AFM in various fields of applied technology including aerospace, electronics, auto industry, material science, biology, telecommunication, energy, drug synthesis, cosmetics, petrochemistry, etc (84)(85)(86)(87)(88). Typically, the main reasons for application of AFM in various fields of technology are as follows:…”

“…This, firstly, furthers to the intermediate calcium comprising phase's formation and then a hydroxyapatite layer which is stable in the organism environment. If using working gas Ar, formed coating surface is always has a positive potential, independently of the substrate type [19]. It is may be connected with the ions Ca 2+ high content in the coating.…”
