Application of a SWAT model for estimating runoff and sediment in two mountainous basins in central Iran

Abstract: The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to model runoff and sediment in the Beheshtabad (3860 km 2 ) and Vanak (3198 km 2 ) watersheds in the northern Karun catchment in central Iran. Model calibration and uncertainty analysis were performed with sequential uncertainty fitting (SUFI-2), which is one of the programs interfaced with SWAT, in the package SWAT-CUP (SWAT Calibration Uncertainty Programs). Two measures were used to assess the goodness of calibration and uncertainty analysis: (a) the perce… Show more

“…Recently, many studies have applied SWAT to simulate hydrologic and geo-hydrologic processes in watersheds of different sizes not only in the US but also in other regions of different climatic and geologic characteristics [20][21][22][23]. In SWAT, discharge and sediment yield as well as some agriculture-related water quality parameters are typically simulated on a daily time scale for each Hydrologic Response Unit (HRU).…”

“…This gives the model strong potential for use in scenario studies of changing land-use and management conditions (e.g. Tripathi et al 2003, Mishra et al 2007, Parajuli et al 2008, Rostamian et al 2008, Hunink et al 2013.…”

“…Moreover, user can manually adjust the period of observation used for calibration (e.g., the period of recession or flood). In this study, calibration was performed using the SUFI2 algorithm, which has been used to optimize SWAT parameters in many studies [39,51,52].…”
