Application of a Non-thermal Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet to the Decomposition of Salicylic Acid to Inorganic Carbon

Abstract: A non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet technique was applied to decompose salicylic acid to inorganic carbon. Excess hydroxyl radical, which has a high oxidation potential, decomposed salicylic acid within 10 min, and total organic carbon decreased to 20% after 30 min.

“…1,2 The use of electrohydrodynamics (EHD), where a voltage is applied to induce the flow of a working fluid, may help reduce the size of actuators. 3 In EHD, three forces are known to act directly on a fluid (unlike in electrophoresis where the forces act on dispersed particles in a fluid). These forces can be described by eq 1.…”

“…Lately, corona discharge with multipin‐to‐plate design was found to eliminate organic contaminants such as perfluorooctanoic acid 27, phenol 33, chloroform 34, and methylene blue 35. A few studies based on plasma have previously investigated the elimination of salicylic acid 36, 37. They found limitations such as the need for longer discharge times.…”

“…[24][25][26][27][28][29][30] In ILs, plasma techniques are popular for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, [31] and there are several reports involving organic chemical reactions. [32] When chemically active species are generated in ILs, it is known that the ILs themselves can be converted to secondary active species such as the imidazolium radical, although this depends on the IL species.…”
