Application and Characterization of Gum from Bombax buonopozense Calyxes as an Excipient in Tablet Formulation

Abstract: This study was undertaken to explore gum from Bombax buonopozense calyxes as a binding agent in formulation of immediate release dosage forms using wet granulation method. The granules were characterized to assess the flow and compression properties and when compressed, non-compendial and compendial tests were undertaken to assess the tablet properties for tablets prepared with bombax gum in comparison with those prepared with tragacanth and acacia gums. Granules prepared with bombax exhibited good flow and co… Show more

“…Both gums are relatively abundant and available, and comparatively cheaper than their synthetic counterparts. They have the potential to be used in food and pharmaceutical industries for functions such as thickening, suspending and binding . In pharmaceutical industries, the choice of materials for use as stabilizers in emulsions or suspending agents in suspension for instance are a function of suitable rheological properties.…”

“…On the other hand, bombax gum was stable after the 3 days of storage and did not exhibit hydrolysis nor was its viscosity affected by storage temperature. It is worthy to note here that the viscosities of sesamum gum and bombax gum as functions of shear rate have been published separately . However, they have been reproduced here (Figure ) to compare their resistances to flow.…”

“…Extraction and development of polymers from natural sources such as plants utilized as food may reduce regulatory requirement for approval [6]. Some of the challenges are the seasonality of optimum yields, variations based on locations/climate and soils and stability as they lose viscosity or deform on storage.…”

“…It occured when the erosion rate of the polymer was higher than its swelling rate. Ngwuluka et al[59] working on paracetamol granules declared that tablets compressed in the presence of maize starch showed a super case II transport.Based on the above findings, formulae F10 and F11 had the required release profile i.e: lowest release before target area (pH1.2 & 6.8) only 13.78 % and 11.00% at the end of the fourth hour, respectively. The cumulative drug release reached 99.711 % 12 hours, respectively.…”
