“…A higher treatment rate was also reported from Iran. 23,24 The two studies conducted in Ankara reported treatment rates of 53% 3 and 16.1%. 4 Variations in rate of severe ROP among NICUs in Turkey are likely.…”

“…The guideline should be evaluated and modified periodically based on the evolving knowledge and advancements in neonatal care unit. 4 The pathogenesis of the development of ROP is still uncertain. Recent observation has found ROP to be a disease of multifactorial origin.…”

“…Actually local criteria for each regional population and neonatal unit are required to determine the screening guideline. 4 Some less developed countries found that bigger, more mature infants develop threshold/ severe ROP. 9 In the Neonatology Division of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, the screening of ROP has been performed routinely since December 2003 and we have found a case of ROP in an infant with birth weight 2500 grams and gestational age of 37 weeks who experienced severe sepsis.…”

“…A recent publication from Bangkok, Thailand, supports the findings of our study: the authors suggested region-specific criteria of Ͻ1500 g or Ͻ33 weeks' GA, emphasizing that these need to be evaluated and revised if necessary. 18 The current picture of the infants who are affected by severe ROP in moderately and poorly developed countries seems to suggest a mixture of "first epidemic" risk factors (inadequately monitored oxygen) and the "second epidemic" risk factors (extreme prematurity), reflecting variation in levels of neonatal care. In this study, we did not attempt to address issues of variation in neonatal care in detail, but policies, practices, and levels of training and expertise do vary between countries and service providers.…”
