Exposure of small laboratory animals to powerfrequency high-voltage electric fields was reported to have endocrinological effects, including changes in pineal melatonin levels. It has been assumed that these results are directly attributable to electric-field effects, but this article suggests that air ionization, produced by corona activity at the animals' body surfaces, may have been biologically active and could be relevant to the interpretation of some epidemiological and other studies. Although presently a matter of dispute, there is evidence that atmospheric ionization may be biologically active and could provide an alternative explanation for at least some apparent electromagnetic field interactions with biological subjects. Consideration of the electricity utilization environment as a whole, rather than one selected component, could allow the introduction of lower-cost, precautionary and putative hazard remediation measures.

The present study examines the effect of static magnetic fields (SMF) on aphids. The effect of a field of moderateintensity (1 mT-1 T) SMF on the life of Sitobion avenae was estimated using the age-stage, two-sex life table. Static magnetic fields were 0.065 T and 0.176 T and exposure was for 0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 min. The results show that the development, mortality, and fecundity of S. avenae were significantly affected by SMF in the second generation after exposure to 0.176 T for 30 min and to 0.065 T for 60 min in comparison to the control group. We concluded that SMF affects the development and reproduction of Sitobion avenae

Zusammenfassung Die Flug‐ und Migrationserscheinungen virusübertragender Insekten wurden im Rahmen biophysikalischer Untersuchungen in West‐, Nord‐ und Süd‐deutschland mit Hilfe englischer Saugfallen und spezieller Meß‐ und Registrierverfahren zur Aufnahme der meteorologischen Faktoren studiert. Zunächst wurden in Beitrag I die in Westdeutschland nachgewiesenen Blattlausarten, sodann in Beitrag II a) die für Norddeutschland in der Juli‐fangperiode registrierten Aphidenarten besprochen. Hiermit werden die in der Herbstfangperiode vom 21. 10. 66 bis 11. 11. 66 in Norddeutschland in einem Gartengelände in Melle in Hannover mit Hilfe englischer Saugfalle festgestellten Blattläuse aufgeführt: insgesamt 39 Arten und 14 weitere Gattungsvertreter. Die in der überwiegenden Mehrzahl als Männchen und Sexuparae vor‐liegenden Tiere verteilen sich auf 6 Familien: mit je 1 Art und Gattung auf die Lachnidae, mit 1 Gattung auf die Chaetophoridae, mit 5 Arten und 1 Gattung auf die Callaphididae, mit 32 Arten und 9 Gattungen auf die Aphididae, mit 1 Gattung auf die Thelaxidae und mit je 1 Art und Gattung auf die Pemphigidae. 92 % unter ihnen sind Schädlinge an landwirtschaftlichen, forstlichen und gärtnerischen Nutzpflanzen und mehr als 23 Arten bekannt als Virusüber‐träger. Im Gegensatz zu den zahlenmäßig geringeren Julifängen, die jedoch eine Reihe seltener Arten am gleichen Standort ergaben, überwiegen im Oktober und November wie in den Herbstfängen Westdeutschlands die Männchen und Sexuparae von Rhopalosiphum padi (L., 1758) v. d. G., 1915 und Rhopalosiphum insertion Walk., 1848 an Zahl und Häufigkeit des Auftretens. Zusätzlich zu den genannten traten in Melle auch Myzus persicae (Sulz., 1776) Mordv., 1921, Sitobium fragariae (Walk.) HRL., 1949 und Ceruraphis eriophori (Walk., 1848) relativ stärker auf. Mehr als 24 Spezies (gekennzeichnet mit N) erwiesen sich in der Lage, nach 31/2 Tagen ununterbrochenen Frostes mit Minimum‐Lufttemperaturen um − 6° C vom 1. 11. bis 5. 11. 66 den gänzlich zum Erliegen gekommenen Herbstflug am 6. 11. 66 bei einer Maximal‐Lufttemperatur von + 13° C mit bemerkenswerter Aktivität wieder aufzunehmen und auch in den folgenden Tagen fortzusetzen.
