RESUMO:O estudo teve como objetivo analisar a abundância e distribuição do ictioplâncton na região da 'Volta Grande do Xingu', Pará, Brasil. As coletas foram realizadas em 04 campanhas durante as fases do ciclo hidrológico local, distribuídas em 16 estações de amostragens. Foram capturados 95 ovos e 398 larvas de peixes, classificadas em 25 táxons, pertencentes a 05 ordens, 16 famílias, 19 gêneros e 18 espécies, dentre as quais 09 são utilizadas como fonte de renda, alimento e subsistência da população local. A maior captura de ovos e larvas foi observada no período noturno, especialmente em locais próximos a bancos de areia, boca de lagos e ao longo dos tributários. Os dados evidenciaram um padrão sazonal, em que a elevada abundância do ictioplâncton esteve relacionada ao pulso de inundação e a pluviosidade local, as demais variáveis (T°, pH, OD e condutividade) também influenciaram de forma diferentemente a distribuição do ictioplâncton. Os resultados revelaram que a área estudada é utilizada como área de desova, criação e dispersão de ovos e larvas de uma variedade de espécies de peixes, evidenciando a necessidade de sua preservação. In artisanal fishing, the techniques used by a community reflect the characteristics of the natural environment, in particular the distribution and availability of resources, as well as local traditions and customs. However, economic development may result in the loss of these traditions. The present study documents the fishing techniques used by the communities on the Xingu River in the Brazilian state of Pará (Maribel, Altamira, Belo Monte, Vitória do Xingu, Vila Nova, Senador José Porfírio, Porto de Moz, and Gurupá). Interviews were used to investigate traditional local knowledge and the distribution of the different fishing methods within the study area. The local fishers described the use of 12 different types of net, 10 hook and line techniques, and eight kinds of spearfishing. Free diving and scuba diving are also used for the capture of ornamental fish.Keywords: fishing gear, traditional knowledge, Brazilian Amazon basin, small-scale fisheries. Etnoconhecimento e tecnologia da pesca artesanal no Rio Xingu, Pará, BrasilResumo Na pesca artesanal, as modalidades de captura refletem as condições do meio ambiente e as tradições e costumes de uma comunidade. As artes de pesca utilizadas pelos pescadores refletem então, a disponibilidade de recursos e a história cultural de uma região. Contudo, o desenvolvimento econômico pode levar a perda dessas tradições. O objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar os apetrechos de pesca utilizados pelos pescadores do rio Xingu, assim como seus conhecimentos acerca do uso dessas artes e a distribuição das mesmas ao longo do rio. Para isso foram realizadas visitas em diversas localidades ao longo do rio Xingu (Maribel, Altamira, Belo Monte, Vitória do Xingu, Vila Nova, Senador José Porfírio, Porto de Moz e Gurupá). Através de entrevistas com os pescadores obteve-se uma descrição das artes de pesca utilizadas na região. Os pescadores do rio Xingu utilizam 12 tipos diferentes de redes, 10 métodos de pesca com linha e anzol e 8 tipos distintos de artes de fisgar. A new species, Moenkhausia iris, is described from the upper rio Madeira basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species is unique among congeners by its color in life, which is the dorsal half of body blue or green and ventral half red, more intense above the anal fin. Additionally, it can be distinguished by having a single, vertically elongated humeral spot, a lateral surface of body, caudal peduncle, and anal fin without distinct blotches or oblique marks and 18–19 branched anal‐fin rays. The new species is endemic from a small tributary of the Rio Guaporé, rio Madeira drainage at Chapada dos Parecis. Its putatively close relatives are endemic to the upper rio Juruena located at the same shield. Both headwaters are very close to each other, sharing other restricted range species, and their hydrogeological topography indicates the upper rio Juruena stretch was captured by the rio Guaporé through a headwater capture event. Moenkhausia iris is much appreciated in the international aquarium trade, as well as many other tetras endemic from the same area. Exportation is based on the capture of wild individuals so sustainable exploitation is necessary for its conservation.
