“…For instance, a recent large‐scale meta‐analysis of over 3 million patients showed that patients with severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression, present a significantly increased risk of CVD, such as coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and congestive heart failure, and CVD‐related mortality . The association between depression, CVD, and CVD mortality might be mediated by several biological and behavioral mechanisms and risk factors, such as sedentary behavior , poor adherence to lifestyle changes and clinical treatment , decreased heart rate variability, higher coronary artery calcium scores, higher intima‐media thickness , and a higher prevalence of coronary heart disease .…”

“…Much like depression, anxiety is a negative prognostic factor in CVD, increasing the risk of recurrent infarctions, cardiac arrests, and deaths [5,6]. Higher anxiety and depression scores are associated with higher carotid intima-media thickness values in patients without previous coronary heart disease (CHD) [7], suggesting that the association is present in subclinical psychiatric and cardiac conditions. This cardiopsychiatric comorbidity has a high social burden considering that anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric conditions [3,8] and that CVD is the most common cause of mortality in many countries [9].…”

“…Study limitations are the cross‐sectional design, which precludes making conclusions regarding the direction of cause and effect. Also, we did not assess psychological factors, such as anxiety or depression and their potential impact on the study findings . Indeed, emerging evidence suggests the potential contribution of improved psychological health to better population‐level cardiovascular health .…”
