S U MM A RYThe adducts of the electronic acceptor TiC1, with %-NO,-, 9%-Br-, m-CH,O-, and m-CH,-acetophenones have been prepared. The IR. absorption spectra of the solid products show all a characteristic lowering of the cu(C=O) frequency and a less marked elevation of the e frequency representing the o(Ph-COMe) vibration. These frequency variations show that the acceptor is added by a dative bond of the carbonyl oxygen donor.The perturbed carbonyl frequencies of the solid adducts of m-nitro-and m-bromoacetophenone with TiC1, resonating with the 8 a and 8 b benzene frequencies have been corrected by means of the theory of perturbation of nearly degenerated levels.These corrected frequencies and the perturbed carbonyl frequencies of the adducts of m-methyl-and m-methoxy-acetophenone form an excellent linear regression with the HAMMETT c constants, which is about the same as the linear regression found for the corresponding adducts of $-acetophenones.1.
