Antiviral Activity of Solanum paniculatum Extract and Constituents

Abstract: Solanum species are traditionally employed as antiherpes and anticancer agents in different countries. S. paniculatum has widespread ethnomedical uses in Brazil, including the treatment of viral infections. This paper reports on the isolation of neotigogenin (1) and the new compound Δ25(27)-tigogenin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), obtained as a mixture of R and S diastereoisomers at C22 from an ethanol extract of S. paniculatum leaves, along with the determination of their cytotoxicity against Vero cells and ant… Show more

“…9,10 Pharmacological studies indicate that S. paniculatum root extract is able to inhibit gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated mice as well as to be effective against ulcer induced by stress in mice, both activities being related to the high concentration of 3-aminospirostane steroidal alkaloids. 8 Further biological activities such as antiviral, 11 anti-inflammatory 5 and anticarcinogenic effects 12 have been described elsewhere.…”

“…Valadares et al investigated the antiviral effect of S. paniculatum against murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCv), human herpes virus type 1 (HHV-1), and vaccinia virus strains Western Reserve (VACV-WR). According to the results, the extract of S. paniculatum inhibited the replication of HHV-1, but exhibited no effect on VACV-WR and EMCv (Valadares et al, 2009). Javid et al also studied the anti HCV activity of chloroform extract of S. nigrum seeds (SNS).…”
