Antiviral Activity of an Aqueous Extract of the CyanobacteriumMicrocystis aeruginosa

Abstract: The crude aqueous extract of a field collected strain of Microcystis aeruginosa (Kütz) showed antiviral activity against influenza A virus. The concentration for 50% inhibition of virus replication in MDCK cells was 11 μg dry extract/mL. The virus specific protein synthesis decreased if the extract was present over the whole time of replication. Furthermore protease inhibitory activity was estimated for the crude aqueous extract and subextracts. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…Antiviral assays. Antiviral activity was determined using the dye uptake assay (Nowotny et al, 1997;Rajbhandari et al, 2001). MDCK and Vero cells were seeded in 96-well tissue culture plates at an initial cell concentration of 60 000 cells/well and incubated for 24 h in a humidified 5% CO 2 atmosphere and preincubated with 100 µL of serial dilutions of plant extracts in medium (100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.1, 1.5 and 0.7 µg/mL) in triplicate for 30 min at 37°C.…”

“…It also showed an anti‐algal activity against the green alga Chlamydomonas neglecta (Ishida & Murakami ). The crude aqueous extract of M. aeruginosa showed antiviral activity against influenza A virus (Nowotny, Mentel, Wegner, Mundt & Lindequist ; Zainuddin, Mundt, Wegner & Mentel ). The present study was aimed at determining the immunostimulating (or immunosupressing) effect of Microcystis in Indian major carp, Labeo rohita , which is an important species in freshwater aquaculture, using application methodology relevant to practical farm conditions.…”
