Antiulcer and gastric antisecretory effects of landolphia owariensis extracts in rats

Abstract: Summary:Water, Methanol and Chloroform Extracts of Landolphia owarensis were investigated for their effects on gastric acid secretion and ulceration in male albino rats. Two models of gastric lesion induced in experimental Wistar rats-HC1/ethanol-induced gastric lesions and Pylorus ligation-induced gastric lesions -were employed. In both models, the antiulcer activity of LA was compared with that of cimetidine (100 mg kg p.o.). In the HCl/Ethanol model, ulcer index and mucus production was determined. In pylor… Show more

“…The high in-vitro pepsinbinding activities of the extract may suggest a possible in-vivo binding to substrate proteins by a non-specific hydrophobic interaction to form complexes that are less vulnerable to peptic hydrolysis (15). The results are in agreement with earlier reports of antiulcer and gastric anti-secretory effects of extracts from Landolphia owariensis (15), Nelsonia canescence (16), and Eruka sativa (3).…”

“…Its other medicinal and nutritional uses have as well been confirmed [2,5,[15][16][17]. Akubugwo and Ugbogu reported the physicochemical properties of Landolphia owariensis seed oil [18].…”

“…In study [ 27 ], induction to ulcer using aspirin is combined with ethanol. Omeprazole [ 27 , 30 ], sucralfate [ 26 , 31 , 32 ], mannitol [ 28 , 33 ], and cimetidine [ 29 , 34 , 35 ] have been used in these studies as referral drugs as well as some comparative substances to the efficacy of honey or comparative substances used in the experiments. Different doses used depend on the duration of the experiment and the weight of the rats.…”
