Antitumoral effects of Allium sivasicum on breast cancer in vitro and in vivo

Abstract: This work aims to investigate the antiproliferative properties of Allium sivasicum (AS) on breast cancer. AS extracts were studied for cytotoxicity against the breast cancer cell lines. In vitro apoptosis studies of breast cancer cells were performed by annexin V staining in flow cytometry analyses. AS showed cytotoxicity to three cancer cell lines. Annexin-positive cells level in AS treated cell lines were higher than the untreated control cells. The expressions of caspase-7 protein and TUNEL positive cells w… Show more

“…The common use of fresh and raw Allium vegetables in the Iranian diet provides an exceptional opportunity to understand the possible connection between fresh Allium consumption and BC risk. However, in humans, the evidence on whether Allium vegetables as prebiotic containing foods can prevent the development of BC is limited, which is overlooked and also detailed in experimental studies [ 12 13 ]. Hence, the aim of the present hospital-based matched case-control study was to assess the association of dietary status of prebiotic containing foods with BC risk among Iranian women in northwest Iran.…”

“…In spite of the progress in cancer therapy, it is still necessary to develop new therapeutic strategies. Natural compounds, as highlighted also in this study, are becoming an important research area for novel and bioactive molecules for drug discovery (Vidinský et al, 2012;Bak et al, 2013;Tepe et al, 2013).…”

“…The antiproliferative properties Allium sivasicum collected from Sivas region was investigated on breast cancer cell lines, namely MCF-7 (IC 50= 21 ± 1,4 µg/mL), MDA-MB-468 (IC 50= 22 ± 1,4 µg/mL) and MDA-MB-231 (IC 50= 24 ± 1,3 µg/mL). In addition, the aqueous extract of A. sivasicum exhibited mean tumor volume inhibition ratio of 38% in the treated group in comparison with the untreated in female albino Wistar rats (89).…”
