Antitumor effects of ginsenoside Rg3 on human hepatocellular carcinoma cells

Abstract: Abstract. The antitumor effects of ginsenoside Rg3 have been reported in several kinds of human malignant tumors. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether ginsenoside Rg3 can inhibit the growth of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines and to discuss the possible molecular mechanism(s). We cultured the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines, SMMC-7721 and HepG2. The cells were treated with different concentrations of ginsenoside Rg3 (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 µg/ ml), and the cell proliferation w… Show more

“…High BP is related to morphological changes and impaired function of vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells. The beneficial effects of ginsenosides have been widely studied and shown to have new antihypertensive effects 3 and prevent or ameliorate various diseases, including atherosclerosis, cancer, and thrombosis 21, 22, 23. In this study, we demonstrated that REKRG increased eNOS phosphorylation and NO production and decreased BP in SHRs.…”

“…Meanwhile, ginsenoisdes Rg 3 and M 1 have well evaluated for their cancer chemopreventative against several cancer cell lines and tumors in vitro and in vivo including leukemia, colon, and HCC [51, 7274]. More recently, ginsenoisde Rg 3 at 25–200  μ g/mL shows significantly antiproliferative effects on liver cancer cells (SMMC-7721, Hep1-6, and HepG2) and hepatocellular tumor growth in vivo by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and promoting cancer cell apoptosis [75, 76]. In another research, ginsenoisde M 1 exhibits antihepatocellular carcinoma activity by augmenting apoptosis via Bid-mediated mitochondrial pathways [77].…”

“…The combination of ginsenosides in ginseng extracts may be important for providing more powerful therapeutic and pharmacological effects [15–17] . Notably, ginsenoside Rg3 provides various protective effects, including anti-inflammatory [18] and antitumor effects [19] , and it also enhances NO production and eNOS activity [20] .…”
