Abstract:In the recent years, mushrooms are distinguished as important natural resources of immunotherapy which can be used as immunomodulating and immunostimulating in the management of some immunodeficiency diseases such as cancer, tumour, HIV, tuberculosis etc. Mushroom of the genus Pleurotus are good sources of several bioactive compounds which are able to augment or complement a desired immune response. Such bioactive compounds are polysaccharopeptides, polysaccharide-proteins, functional proteins (ubiquinone-9, nebrodeolysin, ubiquitin-like peptide and glycoprotein), glucans, proteoglycans and many others. Most of these bioactive compounds follow the immunomodulatory pathway mechanism of polysaccharide (β-glucan) from mushrooms by stimulating activities for both innate and adaptive immune systems. They proliferate and activate innate immune system components such as natural killer (NK) cells, neutrophils, and macrophages, and stimulate cytokines expression and secretion. These cytokines in turn activate adaptive immunity through the promotion of Bcells for antibodies production and stimulation of T-cell differentiation to T helper (Th1 and Th2) cells, which mediate cell and humoral immunities, respectively. In this review, the immunotherapeutic potential of oyster mushroom in relation to bioactive compounds produced is shown and this suggests that the oyster mushrooms are one of the most important natural products and functional foods.

The Himalayan forests of Uttarakhand represent a natural repository for the rich biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent. Forest resources in this region form an integral part of socio-economy and cultural practices. Mushrooms are forest products which have been used as food for a long time but very few for therapeutic purposes, which is associated to the lack of awareness and knowledge. If properly identified, these mystic organisms can be very promising in prevention and cure of various ailments. The present study is a part of macrofungal exploration carried out from 2015-2016. As a result, 15 mushroom species are identified which possess a spectrum of bioactive compounds and therapeutic potential. All of these species are morphologically described along with the habit, habitat and notes on their healing capacities.

Fungi of Pleurotus genus have attracted a great interest due to their medicinal properties such as antiinflammatory, antimicrobial and antitumor. These properties are attributed mainly to polysaccharides synthesized by Pleurotus. This work aimed to study the mycelial growth of P. ostreatus in submerged culture, evaluating the influence of the initial concentration of substrate (20 and 40 g/L of glucose) and the pH (4 and 6) on kinetic parameters of production of biomass. The effectiveness of different doses (10, 30 and 50 mg/kg) of a mycelium polysaccharide fraction extracted from P. ostreatus in reducing Sarcoma 180 development in mice was also verified. In the range of this study, maximum concentration of mycelial biomass (about 12.8 g/L) was obtained using 40.0 g/L of glucose, at pH 4.0. The total biomass productivity (Px) was not significantly affected by substrate concentration and pH, reaching values of 0.034 g/L.h. Sarcoma 180 tumor weight was reduced in 74.1, 75.5 and 53.7% when 10, 30 and 50 mg/kg were administered, respectively. These results show the high antitumor potential of intracellular polysaccharide fraction of mycelial biomass of P. ostreatus, particularly at lower doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg.
