Referências AbstractIn this contribution, the mushroom Agaricus blazei Murril was investigated for its properties against the local effects of Bothrops alternatus venom in rabbits to antagonize the local effects (edema, hemorrhage and necrosis). The results showed that the group treated with Agaricus blazei had smaller edema and hemorrhage than Control group (saline).Os acidentes ofídicos constituem um sério problema médico, social e econômico no Brasil e 90% desses, são causados por espécies do gênero Bothrops 1 . O veneno botrópico é constituído por uma complexa mistura de enzimas, toxinas e peptídeos, que produz um quadro patofisiológico caracterizado por alterações locais (inflamação, edema, formação de vesículas, necrose e intensa dor) e alterações sistêmicas (hemorragia, choque hipovolêmico e desordens da coagulação), que podem levar a falência renal aguda 2,3 . O tratamento específico em casos de envenenamento botrópico é a administração do soro antibotrópico 4 . Se esse é administrado rapidamente, a neutralização dos efeitos sistêmicos é usualmente conseguida com sucesso, mas a antagonização das lesões locais é uma questão mais difícil 5,6 . Em muitos casos, a incapacidade da reversão das alterações locais resulta em necrose com perda de estruturas mais profundas como músculos e tendões, resultando em seqüelas irreversíveis 7 . Devido à relevância dos efeitos locais no envenenamento botrópico, vários grupos de pesquisa tem estudado esse problema sob diferentes perspectivas 8 . Os cogumelos são utilizados desde os tempos mais remotos com finalidades medicinais para combater hemorragias, cólicas, feridas, asma, sendo que uma das aplicações mais importantes dos cogumelos na medicina humana, é a ação antitumoral 9 . The mushroom Agaricus blazei Murrill was discovered in Piedade, state of São Paulo, Brazil, and sent to Japan to be studied for its medicinal properties. Studies in guinea pigs revealed antitumor properties, triggering Japanese importation of A. blazei from Brazil. Because of its high price on the international market, many companies and rural growers produce A. blazei as alternative crop to increase income, but because interest in this mushroom occurred suddenly there has not been enough time for the scientific community to investigate it and, technology used for its cultivation is still based on empirical rules. There are also some contradicting data regarding the classification of this mushroom, and its antitumor properties still need to be confirmed in humans. Key words: antitumor properties, cogumelo do sol, royal agaricus, sun mushroom VERDADES E MITOS SOBRE O COGUMELO Agaricus blazeiRESUMO: O cogumelo Agaricus blazei Murrill foi descoberto na cidade de Piedade, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, e enviado para o Japão para o estudo das suas propriedades medicinais. Com a descoberta das suas propriedades antitumorais, comprovadas em cobaias, o Japão passou a importar esse cogumelo do Brasil. Devido ao seu elevado preço no mercado internacional, muitas empresas e produtores rurais passaram a buscar nesse cogumelo uma nova alternativa de renda. Diante de um interesse tão repentino, não houve tempo para que a comunidade científica pesquisasse o assunto, de maneira que a tecnologia de cultivo é ainda muito empírica. Além disso, existem informações contraditórias acerca da classificação desse cogumelo e as suas propriedades antitumorais ainda precisam ser confirmadas em seres humanos.
