Antiseptic Polymer–Surfactant Complexes with Long-Lasting Activity against SARS-CoV-2

Abstract: Antiseptic polymer gel–surfactant complexes were prepared by incorporating the low-molecular-weight cationic disinfectant cetylpyridinium chloride into the oppositely charged, slightly cross-linked polymer matrices. Three types of polymers were used: copolymers of acrylamide and sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate; copolymers of acrylamide and sodium methacrylate; copolymers of vinylpyrrolidone and sodium methacrylate. It was shown that the rate of the release of the cationic disinfectant from the op… Show more

“…Hydrogels are used in sanitary products such as diapers [ 23 , 24 ], because of their highly absorbent properties, and in the pharmaceutical industry as superdisintegrants [ 25 ]. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, hydrogels have also been in particular demand as carriers for disinfectant molecules, allowing them to be used to implement antiseptic coatings with a long-lasting effect against COVID-19 in hospitals [ 26 ]. Another popular application area is the biomedical field.…”

“…Self-organization in polyelectrolyte-surfactant solutions causes the formation of functional nanoscale systems [2,6], which are used in nanotechnology [7,8] and medicine [4,9]. Polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes are demanded for template synthesis of materials [10,11], target drug delivery systems [4,7,12,13], and fabrication of soft matter with smart stimuli-responsive capabilities [5,14].…”
