Antisecretory Factor (AF) egg-yolk peptides reflects the intake of AF-activating feed in hens

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present investigation was to determine the level of the active form of the endogenous protein Antisecretory Factor (actAF), and also the active form of AF immunoreactive molecules in the affinity purified egg yolk. Design: Determination of AF in affinity purified egg yolk by means of in vivo and in vitro methods.

“…The AF protein can be endogenously stimulated by either intestinal exposure to bacterial toxins or to the intake of specific food components (Bjorck et al, 2000;Lange and Lonnroth, 2001;Lonnroth et al, 1988). Furthermore, preformed AF can also be passively administered to the patient by peroral intake of Salovum, a spray dried egg yolk with a high content of the AF protein (Kaya et al 2017). The "active site" of AF, i.e.…”

“…Salovum® is enriched with AF peptides, among them AF-16 [16], which in experimental animal models of focal brain injury has been demonstrated to exert a significant, suppressive effect on cerebral edema with pathologically elevated ICP, and to improve cognitive function [1,6,11]. AF-16 can bypass the blood-brain barrier after iv and intranasal administration and is detected both in cerebral tissue and CSF [1,17].…”

“…Consuming SPC-flakes stimulates endogenous production of AF [ 9 ]. Salovum is a freeze-dried egg yolk powder based on eggs from hens fed with SPC-flakes and contains large amounts of AF [ 10 ]. Salovum and SPC-flakes are classified as medical food by the European Union and can be bought without a prescription in pharmacies in Sweden.…”
