Antiradical and antidiabetic properties of standardized extract of Sunderban mangrove Rhizophora mucronata

Abstract: Background:Mangroves have the ability to grow where no other vascular plants survive. Rhizophora mucronata is a true mangrove and traditionally used to treat diabetes and its allied complications. Objectives:In the present study, we standardized the 80% methanolic standardized extract of R. mucronata leaves (RH) and found out its antiradical and antidiabetic activities.Materials and Methods:The methanolic extract of R. mucronata leaves (RH) was standardized and quantified for phenolics, flavonoinds, gallic acid… Show more

“…Among these compounds, inositol and pinitol showed promising activity in the STZ model at 100 mg/kg dose level (Lakshmi et al 2006). The ethanolic leaf extracts of R. apiculata showed hypoglycaemic and antihyperglycaemic effect in normal, glucose-fed and STZ diabetic rats (Sur et al 2004(Sur et al , 2015. The hypoglycaemic action of R. apiculata is attributed to the presence of flavonoids along with other bioactive compounds.…”

“…19 Some recent studies also supported that hydro-alcoholic extract of R. mucronata leaves exhibited antiradical and anti-diabetic effects. 12,13 A study from Bangladesh demonstrated that, the ethanol extracts of Rhizophora mucronata Poir leaves showed significant inhibition of carbohydrate digestion and absorption, which has resulted in hypoglycemic effects of Rhizophora mucronata.…”

“…11 Recent study reported the anti-diabetic action of hydro-methanolic and hydro-ethanolic extract of R mucronata (Sundarban Mangrove) leaves in diabetes model. 12,13 Hence, the present study has undertaken to explore the comparative analysis between fresh juice and ethanolic extract of the leaves of Rhizophora mucronata Lam. in diabetic rat model.…”

“…The extracts of some mangrove plants show an antibacterial activity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that has been resistant to a variety of previously administered drugs 12 . The test results performed by 13,14 showed the R. mucronata leaf extract had antihyperglycemic and antioxidant activity. The ethanol extracts of bark of R. mucronata Lamk.…”
