Antipruritic Effects of the Fruits of Chaenomeles sinensis

Abstract: A 35% EtOH extract of the fruits of Chaenomeles sinensis, long utilized as a folk medicine for cough, significantly inhibited the pruritogenic agent compound 48/80 (COM)-induced scratching behavior in mice. Antipruritic activity-guided fractionation and purification yielded active quercetin, apigenin, and catechin derivatives, which exhibited significant inhibitory effects on COM-induced scratching behavior. To the best of our knowledge, apigenin (5), apigenin 7-glucronide (6), and apigenin 4'-methoxy-7-glucro… Show more

“…Flavonoid is one of the main phytochemical constituents in CSF and has been proven effective in preventing free radical-caused oxidative damage (Hamauzu et al, 2005;Zhou et al, 2007;Hu et al, 2008). Antibacterial, antiviral, antihemolytic and antipruritic activities have been reported as pharmacological activities of CSF (Osawa et al, 1997;Lee et al, 2002;Oku et al, 2003;Sawai et al, 2008). Anti-inflammatory effect of CSF was inferred based on the fact that it inhibited histamine release from rat mast cells and inhibited activation of hyaluronidase (Osawa et al, 1999(Osawa et al, , 2001).…”

“…In fact, many researchers have reported the distinct mechanism-based anti-allergic effect of fruits. [11][12][13] Given the effectiveness of quince HW-supplemented products against sore throats and coughs, quince HW can also be expected to have some sort of inhibitory effect against the type I allergic process.…”
