Antiproliferative potential of Andean Berry (Vaccinium meridionaleSwartz) juice in combination with Aspirin in human SW480 colon adenocarcinoma cells

Abstract: Andean Berry (Vaccinium meridionale Sw.) is a South American fruit rich in phytochemicals with promising anti‐cancer properties as co‐adjuvants to nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs such as Aspirin. This study aimed to evaluate the antiproliferative potential of Andean Berry Juice (ABJ) in combination with Aspirin in human SW480 colon adenocarcinoma cells. ABJ primarily contained 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic and chlorogenic acids. The combined treatment of ABJ (IC50: 30.0 ± 0.11%) and Aspirin (IC50: 20.0 ± 0.57) exh… Show more

“…Despite no reports for green synthesized AuNPsCE inducing ROS in colorectal cancer cells, phytochemicals from R. communis leaves such as p-coumaric acid have been linked to ROS generation, inducing further apoptosis and a fall in the mitochondrial membrane potential [ 57 ]. This effect has been observed in SW480 cells treated with phenolic-rich berries extracts [ 65 ]. R. communis leaves extracts induce ROS in LPS-stimulated murine RAW264.7 macrophages, acting as critical mediators of several pro-inflammatory responses, such as the canonical pathway or even NLRP3 inflammasome activation [ 34 , 39 ].…”

“…Andean blueberry juices are highly appealing in the growing market of functional beverages. It has been suggested by several in vitro studies that these juices exhibit pro‐apoptotic and antiproliferative effects in transformed leukaemic and colorectal cancer cell lines (Arango‐Varela et al ., 2021, 2022). Given their sensory appealing features, their high concentration of phenolic compounds, in particular of anthocyanins, and their bioactivity (Garzón et al ., 2010; Maldonado‐Celis et al ., 2014; Bravo et al ., 2016; Agudelo et al ., 2018; Gallego‐Peláez et al ., 2021), their transformation into more stable products with different functionalities as ingredients have arisen interest (Alzate‐Arbeláez et al ., 2019; Estupiñan‐Amaya et al ., 2020; Garzón et al ., 2021).…”
