Antiproliferative and Apoptosis Inducing Effects of Non-Polar Fractions from Lawsonia inermis L. in Cervical (HeLa) Cancer Cells

Abstract: Two non-polar fractions viz. hexane (Hex-LI) and chloroform fraction (CHCl 3 -LI) of Lawsonia inermis were studied for their antiproliferative potential in various cancer cell lines viz. HeLa, MCF-7, A549 and C6 glioma cells. Both the fractions showed more than 60 % of growth inhibition in all the tested cell lines at highest tested concentration. In clonogenic assay, different concentrations of Hex-LI and CHCl 3 -LI decreased the number and size of colonies as compared to control in HeLa cells. The apoptotic … Show more

“…In literature, few articles tested a cytotoxic effect of essential oil of Henna; therefore, many studies explore a diverse solvent extraction and the difference of their effect. Then; Kumar et al [37] isolated two non-polar fractions from Lawsonia inermis with hexane (Hex-LI) and with chloroform (CHCl3-LI) which were explored for their anti-proliferative potential against human cell lines (HeLa, MCF-7, A549 et C6). They showed considerable cytotoxicity effects against HeLa with Hex-LI (IC50 = 382.44 μg/mL) and with CHCL3-LI (IC50 = 741.44 μg/mL).…”

“…Dasgupta et al [50] reported anticarcinogenic activity of Henna leaves against benzo(a)pyrene induced forestomach as well as against 7,12 dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-initiated and croton oil-promoted skin papillomagenesis. In our previous reports [51, 52], we reported extract/fractions of L. inermis with antioxidant, antiproliferative and apoptosis inducing activity. Since But-LI fraction was found to exhibit high antioxidant activity and is rich in various polyphenolic phytoconstituents viz .…”

“…Different research groups evaluate cell death using either cell clonogenic assay (CA) or PI (Kumar et al 2015) assay. Some others use MTT assay (Gehl et al 1998;Kaminska et al 2012).…”
