Antiplasmodial Alkaloids from the Australian Bryozoan Amathia lamourouxi

Abstract: An extract from the bryozoan Amathia lamourouxi with antiplasmodial activity was identified through high-throughput screening of an Australian marine invertebrate extract library against Plasmodium falciparum. Chemical investigation of A. lamourouxi resulted in the isolation of six new brominated alkaloids, convolutamines K and L (1 and 2), volutamides F−H (3−5), and 2,5-dibromo-1-methyl-1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde (6). Three of the compounds (2−4) displayed moderate to potent antiplasmodial activity against both… Show more

“…We have recently published the structures of several new brominated alkaloids isolated from the bryozoan Amathia lamourouxi . 48 To further test the application of this dereplication methodology, we acquired DOSY data for both the free bases and TFA salts of ( 70 and 71 ) and K ( 72 and 73 ) and the free base of volutamine F ( 74 ). Their D pre vs. D exp were all within 5.5% error.…”

“…Compound 186 was isolated from Amathialamourouxi, a bryozoan found in rock pools. It is a simpler molecule; its name is 2,5-dibromo-1-methyl-1 H -indole-3-carbaldehyde [ 54 ]. Compounds 187 to 195 are monoterpenoid indole alkaloids that were extracted from the leaves of Tabernaemontana pachysiphon .…”

“…During a high-throughput screening of an Australian marine invertebrate extract library against Plasmodium falciparum, Kleks et al [62] isolated 2,5-dibromo-1-methyl-1Hindole-3-carbaldehyde (165) (Figure 18) from samples of a bryozoan Amathia lamourouxi, collected from the rock pools of Woolgoolga and as storm debris from Korora Beach, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia.…”
