Antioxidant Property of an Ethanol Extract of the Stem of Opuntia ficus-indica var. Saboten

Abstract: An ethanol extract of the stem of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten (OFS) was assessed to determine the mechanism(s) of its antioxidant activity. The ethanol extract exhibited a concentration-dependent inhibition of linoleic acid oxidation in a thiocyanate assay system. In addition, the OFS extract showed dose-dependent free-radical scavenging activity, including DPPH radicals, superoxide anions (O(2)(*-)), and hydroxyl radicals (*OH), using different assay systems. The OFS ethanol extract was also found to be… Show more

“…Superoxide anion is the most common free radical in vivo and is generated in a variety of biological system and the concentration of superoxide anion increases, under condition of oxidative stress [54] . In the PMS-NADH-NBT system, superoxide anions were derived from dissolved oxygen by the PMS-NADH coupling reaction, which then reduced to NBT.…”

“…In other research, the antioxidant activity and total phenolic compounds of 14 different varieties of date palm seed extracts with 5 solvents (water, methanol, methanol (50%), DMSO, and water: methanol: acetone: formic acid (20:40:40:0.1)) were evaluated 20 . Ferric reducing antioxidant power assay and Folin-Ciocalteu reagent have been used for determination of the antioxidant effect and phenolic content of date seeds.…”

“…The addition of sample protects DNA from damage by scavenging hydroxyl radicals as seen on gel by employing agarose gel electrophoresis. DNA protection assay was performed using supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA with slight modifications [ 24 ]. Plasmid DNA (0.3 µl) was incubated with 30 mM H 2 O 2 , 50 µM ascorbic acid and 80 µM FeCl 3 containing AME concentrations (200 to 1000 µg/ml) and finally the volume of the mixture was raised up to 20 µl.…”
