“…While relatively non-toxic, DMSO can alter processes including cellular differentiation, transcription and methylation (Iwatani et al, 2006;Preisler and Giladi, 1975). Of particular relevance to the present study, DMSO can act as an antioxidant by scavenging hydroxyl radicals, but can also act as a pro-oxidant through interactions with protein thiol groups (Sanmartín-Suárez et al, 2011). UV-A-induced oxidative DNA damage largely occurs through production of singlet oxygen, which is not scavenged by DMSO (Wei et al, 1997).…”

“…In our study, flurbiprofen did not show significant effect on TOS at any concentrations for two treatment periods (12 and 24 h). We considered that these constant TOS values were related with free radical scavenger characteristic of DMSO (Repine et al, 1981;Rosenblum, 1983;Sanmartin-Suarez et al, 2011). Total antioxidant values were statistically decreased in some treatments (58.50 and 117 mg/kg treatment groups, 12 h) and these reductions caused oxidative stress at these groups.…”

“…There are a number of antioxidants with respective spectrum for neutralizing reactive oxygen species. DMSO, an important polar aprotic solvent, has antioxidant properties such as reducing lipid peroxidation (34). Catalase is a common enzyme found in nearly all living organisms that are exposed to oxygen, where it catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen (35).…”
