Antioxidant Potential and its Correlation with the Contents of Phenolic Compounds and Flavonoids of Methanolic Extracts from Different Medicinal Plants

Show more

“…Correlation analysis indicated that the phenolics and flavonoids were the major reductants of PFF with the correlation coefficients being 0.914 and 0.865, respectively (Table 1s). This indicated that phenolic acids and flavonoids play an important role in Fe 3+ reducing power, which has been reported by many researches (Amarowicz et al, ; Teixeira, do Vale, Almeida, Ferreira, & Guimarães, ). In summary, 50% acetone can be used to enrich antioxidants and reductants from PFF.…”

“…The variation in Iron concentration from one tissue to the other is an indication of the difference in its utilization by tissues. These results confirm that the presence of high levels of flavonoids does not always correspond to high antioxidant properties in plants (Teixeira et al, 2017).…”

“…These results contrast with other studies which showed a positive correlation between flavonoids extracted and their DPPH scavenging activity as well as iron reducing power (Rohman et al, 2010;Abu Bakar et al, 2015;Ojwang et al, 2017). These results show that the presence of high levels of flavonoids does not always correspond to high antioxidant properties in plants as these metabolites have a wide variety of activities (Teixeira et al, 2017).…”

“…TPC values were moderately correlated with TFC (r=0.680, p<0.001), suggested that 46.24% (r 2 ) variation in the TPC was due to TFC. Recent studies have revealed that the TPC was associated with the antioxidant activity (Teixeira et al, 2017;Li et al, 2018). TPC showed a highly significant correlation with FRAP and TEAC values which indicated that the main component of PCs from fractions enabled to transfer their electron to neutralize free radical and to reduce the metal ion.…”
