Antioxidant effects of ryegrass phenolics in lamb liver and plasma

Abstract: Sixteen lambs were divided into two groups and fed two different diets. Eight lambs were stall-fed with a concentrate-based diet (C), and the remaining eight lambs were allowed to graze on Lolium perenne (G). The antioxidant status was measured in the liver and plasma samples before and after solid-phase extraction (SPE) to probe the antioxidant effects that grass phenolic compounds may have conferred onto the animal tissues. The liver and plasma samples from grass-fed lambs displayed a greater antioxidant cap… Show more

“…The total concentration of polyphenols in sample extracts was determined according to the Folin–Ciocalteau colorimetric method, as reported by López‐Andrés et al. (). The results were expressed as g gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/kg DM.…”

“…Cheese extracts were prepared, according to the method of Rashidinejad et al (2013) with slight modifications, to measure cheese antioxidant status by the determination of total phenolic compound content and the TEAC assay with the same methods already described for feeds (López-Andrés et al, 2014;Re et al, 1999). To prepare the cheese sample extracts, milled and freeze-dried cheese samples (0.5 g) were homogenised for 30 s and then extracted for 30 min with 25 ml of methanol (95% aqueous solution) containing 1% HCl at 50°C on an orbital shaker at 200 rpm.…”

“…The total concentration of polyphenols in the feed sample extracts was measured using the Folin-Ciocalteau colorimetric method, as described by López-Andrés et al (2014). Briefly, 100 μl of the sample extract was transferred into a 15-ml centrifuge tube; then, 900 μl of distilled water and 500 μl of the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, diluted to a concentration of 1 N with distilled water, were added.…”

Aparecen compostos fenólicos no caso do Dactilo (Dactylis glomerata) (Hauck et al 2014).…”
