Antioxidant Content, Antioxidant Activity, and Antibacterial Activity of Five Plants from the Commelinaceae Family

Abstract: Commelinaceae is a family of herbaceous flowering plants with many species used in ethnobotany, particularly in South America. However, thus far reports of their bioactivity are few and far between. The primary aim of this study was to quantify the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of five Commelinaceae methanolic leaf extracts. The antioxidant content was evaluated by the total phenolic content (TPC), total tannin content (TTC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) assays. The antioxidant activities measure… Show more

“…Three phenolics, namely, luteolin, apigenin, and umbelliferone, were putatively identified by comparison of extracted positive or negative ions with literature data, for which those were the main constituents previously reported [2,3]. Five flavonoid constituents (13)(14)(15)(16)(17) were all detected in EAE, AE, and ME of HFF. Furthermore, pinocembrin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (13), the main antifungal flavonoid, was also detected in CE of HFF.…”

“…The total flavonoid contents (TFC) in various HFF extracts were analyzed using the aluminum chloride method [17] with few modifications. Briefly, 1.0 mL of each extract solution was mixed with 2.0 mL of 0.1 mM aluminum chloride, 1.0 mL of 1 M sodium acetate (pH 5.2), and 6.0 mL of methanol.…”
