Antioxidant, Biomolecule Oxidation Protective Activities of Nardostachys jatamansi DC and Its Phytochemical Analysis by RP-HPLC and GC-MS

Abstract: The study aimed at analyzing the metabolite profile of Nardostachys jatamansi using RP-HPLC, GC-MS and also its antioxidant, biomolecule protective and cytoprotective properties. The 70% ethanolic extract of Nardostachys jatamansi (NJE) showed the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids (gallic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, homovanillin, epicatechin, rutin hydrate and quercetin-3-rhamnoside) analyzed by RP-HPLC, whereas hexane extract revealed an array of metabolites (fatty acids, sesquiterpenes, alkane hyd… Show more

“…Therefore, the single band appeared at sites 1 and 3, which indicated the plasmid was not affected by the oxidizing agent due to the presence of compound (1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-4-((2,3,4-trihydroxy phenyl) diazenyl)-1H-pyrazol-3(2H)-one) working as antioxidants. These results are consistent with many studies such as those conducted by Razack et al [13] and by Lahneche et al [14].…”

“…The phenolics have the free radical scavenging, chelation of redox-active metal ions, modulation of gene expression and interaction with the cell signaling pathways. 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 The plasmid DNA pUC19 which consists of 3 forms single-stranded relaxed nicked DNA (R Form) and double-stranded nicked and linear DNA (L-Form). Plasmid DNA damage caused by hydroxyl (•OH) radicals generates Fenton reaction which makes DNA strands to yield its open circular or relaxed forms.…”

“…In recent years, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has commonly been employed for detection of functional groups and identification of various bioactive therapeutic compounds that are present in medicinal plants 13,14 . GC-MS is one of the best, fast and accurate techniques to detect various compounds, including alcohols, alkaloids, nitro compounds, long chain hydrocarbons, organic acids, steroids, esters and amino acids 15 , and requires a small volume of plant extracts. Hence, in the present study, GC-MS technique was adopted for detection and identification of phytochemical compounds present in the medicinal plant, Amomum nilgiricum belonging to Zingiberaceae family.…”
