Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is a systemic medical condition and has been attributed to multi-organ pathologies. Genetic, nutritional, hormonal, age and gender differences are involved in abnormal homocysteine (Hcy) metabolism that produces HHcy. Homocysteine is an intermediate for many key processes such as cellular methylation and cellular antioxidant potential and imbalances in Hcy production and/or catabolism impacts gene expression and cell signaling including GPCR signaling. Furthermore, HHcy might damage the vagus nerve and superior cervical ganglion and affects various GPCR functions; therefore it can impair both the parasympathetic and sympathetic regulation in the blood vessels of skeletal muscle and affect long-term muscle function. Understanding cellular targets of Hcy during HHcy in different contexts and its role either as a primary risk factor or as an aggravator of certain disease conditions would provide better interventions. In this review we have provided recent Hcy mediated mechanistic insights into different diseases and presented potential implications in the context of reduced muscle function and integrity. Overall, the impact of HHcy in various skeletal muscle malfunctions is underappreciated; future studies in this area will provide deeper insights and improve our understanding of the association between HHcy and diminished physical function.

The results from different sports studies regarding changes in parameters of renal function as a consequence of exercise-induced muscular damage are conflicting. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamics of renal function in association with the phases of the macro cycle and to establish possible relationship between indicators of muscle damage and renal function in basketball players. Methods: Nine professional basketball players were monitored during 12 weeks starting from the first day of pre-season preparations. Blood samples were collected three times: before the pre-season, during the pre-season and during the in-season to determine blood creatine kinase (CK), creatinine and urea concentrations and to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Results: The ANOVA test revealed statistically significant changes in CK and eGFR, associated with physical loads in the basketball players. However, the test did not confirm relationships between indicators of renal function and muscle damage during any phase of the macro cycle. Conclusion: Elevated levels of CK induced by sport-specific activities are not associated with changes in renal function despite the use of frequent and intense physical loads in male professional basketball players. Further research is necessary to elucidate regularities in changes of renal function among team sport representatives.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a composição corporal e ingestão alimentar em jogadores amadores de rúgbi por posicionamento em campo: backs e forwards. Quatorze participantes foram submetidos a medidas de massa corporal, estatura e dobras cutâneas para cálculo do percentual de gordura e massa livre de gordura; para dados da ingestão alimentar foi aplicado o registro alimentar de três dias; os valores nutricionais obtidos foram comparados às recomendações do American College of Sports Medicine e Recommended Dietary Intakes. Normalidade dos dados foi checada pelo teste Kolmogorov-Smirnov e diferenças entre backs e forwards pelo teste t de Student para amostras independentes. Foi adotado p < 0,05 como nível de significância. Forwards apresentaram maior massa corporal (87,25 ± 6,06 kg) e massa livre de gordura (70,97 ± 6,09 kg) em relação aos backs (76,07 ± 5,45 kg; 61,91 ± 6,02 kg; p < 0,05, respectivamente). Não houve diferenças estatísticas entre os grupos para consumo de água, energia, macro e micronutrientes (p > 0,05), com exceção do ácido fólico (p = 0,037). Os jogadores apresentaram consumo inadequado de água (n = 14), carboidratos (n = 14), lipídios (n = 10), gorduras saturadas (n = 14), fibras (n = 11), cálcio (n = 9), fósforo (n = 7), magnésio (n = 14), zinco (n = 11), manganês (n = 13), selênio (n = 14), vitamina A (n = 13), E (n = 9), C (n = 10), tiamina (n = 14), riboflavina (n = 14), niacina (n = 11), ácido pantotênico (n = 8), piridoxina (n = 14) e ácido fólico (n = 13). Embora forwards apresentem maior massa corporal, massa livre de gordura, e consumo de ácido fólico em relação aos backs, a inadequação alimentar ocorreu independente do posicionamento em campo, o que sinaliza para necessidade de aconselhamento profissional.
