Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Activities of a Commercial Noni Juice revealed by Carrageenan-induced Paw Edema

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of a commercial product of noni (Morinda citrifolia) juice. Carrageenan-induced rat paw edema was employed as inflammatory model. One control and three experimental groups were formed. Experimental groups were administered noni juice alone, noni juice+carrageenan, and carrageenan alone. Oxidant and antioxidant capacity were determined by d-ROMs test and BAP test, respectively. Plasma concentrations of endothelin-1 and leptin were meas… Show more

“…Reduction of inflammation markers, such as cytokines (IL6, TNF- α ) and CRP may lead to an improvement of glycaemia and cardiovascular prognosis [ 37 ]. One of the most beneficial properties of NFJ is its anti-inflammatory activity, which has been proven in epidemiological investigations [ 23 , 35 ] and preclinical studies in tissue culture [ 38 ] and animal models [ 39 , 40 ]. Recently we observed anti-inflammatory effects in dentistry patients with gingivitis after mouth wash with NFJ followed by swallowing [ 41 ].…”

“…The noni fruit juice prevented inflammation in ovalbumin‐sensitized Brown Norway rats (Dussossoy et al, , ). The polysaccharides‐rich extract, chloroform fraction and damnacanthal from roots of M. citrifolia showed antiinflammatory activity (Okusada et al, ; Sousa et al, ; Yilmazer et al, ). The monotropein from M. officinalis roots contributes to the antinociceptive and antiinflammatory action (Choi et al, ).…”

“…The genus Morinda (family Rubiaceae) has over 80 species, and the most popular species is Morinda citrifolia (Rubiaceae), generally known as “Noni,” a tropical tree widely found in Polynesia, Cambodia, India, central/northern South America, and Caribbean countries (McClatchey, ; Yilmazer et al, ). Different parts of the noni plant (such as the root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, bark, and seed) have been topically and internally used in traditional medicines for over 2,000 years.…”
