Antioxidant and Anti-Diabetic Activities of Polysaccharides from Guava Leaves

Abstract: Guava (Psidium guajava L., Myrtaceae) leaves have been used as a folk herbal tea to treat diabetes for a long time in Asia and North America. In this study, we isolated polysaccharides from guava leaves (GLP), and evaluated its antioxidant activity in vitro and anti-diabetic effects on diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin combined with high-fat diet. The results indicated that GLP exhibited good DPPH, OH, and ABTS free-radical scavenging abilities, and significantly lowered fasting blood sugar, total choles… Show more

“…The hydroxyl groups in polysaccharide molecules can be complexed with metal ions (such as Fe 2+ , Cu 2+ ) which are necessary for the production of hydroxyl radicals, so as to inhibit the production of hydroxyl radicals that can start lipid peroxidation or prevent them from producing lipid peroxide to decompose lipids, thus inhibiting the formation of various reactive oxygen species. In addition, polysaccharides can also improve the biological activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, thus playing an antioxidant role (Luo et al., 2007). Therefore, it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study the extraction, structural modification, separation and purification, structural characterization, and antioxidant activity of plant polysaccharides, and also provide a theoretical basis for its medicinal value.…”

“…Curcumin, a natural polyphenol derived from the rhizome of turmeric, and quercetin, an antioxidant derived from fruits and vegetables, have been shown to have potent FRSA and antidiabetic activity [ 52 ]. Polysaccharides from the leaves of Guava (GLP) [ 53 ], Lepidium Meyenii (MECA) [ 54 ], and Olive [ 55 ] have been evaluated for their antioxidant activity in vitro and have been found to display good FRSA.…”

“…Cholesterol CHOL is a key blood lipid index in clinical practice, and high levels of CHOL can lead to diabetes, coronary heart disease, and atherosclerosis ( Luo et al, 2019 ). CHOL levels (3.62 mmol/L, p < 0.001) were higher in HFD mice than in LFC mice (2.24 mmol/L).…”
