The antioxidative potential of ethanol extracts of Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra (Hypericaceae) and Hypericum scabroides Robson & Poulter (Hypericaceae) were investigated for the first time using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), metal chelating, reducing power, hydroxyl radical, total antioxidant activity, and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays. Both extracts tested were found to be highly active in the DPPH radical scavenging assay. The IC 50 values of H. triquetrifolium (HT) and H. scabroides (HS) in the DPPH radical scavenging assay were 39.0 and 33.8 µg/mL, respectively. The amounts of total phenolic compounds were also determined, and total phenolic content of 1 mg H. triquetrifolium and H. scabroides ethanol extracts were equivalent to 267 and 333 µg gallic acid. Metal chelating ability was found to be low compared with EDTA. Both ethanol extracts of Hypericum species exhibited a high reducing power, suggesting that extracts had strong electron-donating capacity. The degradation of deoxyribose by hydroxyl radicals was shown to be inhibited by Hypericum extracts, acting mainly by scavenging hydroxyl radicals rather than as chelators of iron ions. Total antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of HT and HS were tested by using ferric thiocyanate (FTC) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods. Antioxidative activities of both extracts were found to be comparable with vitamin E. Moreover, both extracts showed notable capacity to suppress Fe 2+ -induced lipid peroxidation in rat brain homogenate. The results obtained in the current study indicate that ethanol extracts of HS and HT are a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander), an everyday spice in the Indian kitchen is known to add flavor to the cuisine. It is an annual herb belonging to the Apiaceae (Umbellifera) family. The hydro-alcohol extract of Coriandrum sativum L. at the dose of 1 mg/ml was subjected to a series of in vitro assays viz. 2, 2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, lipid peroxidation by thiobarbituric acid, reducing power and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging in order to study its antioxidant efficacy in detail. The amount of flavonoids in 70% ethanol extract was found to be 44.5 μg and that of the total phenols was 133.74 μg gallic acid equivalents per mg extract. The extracts of the leaves showed metal chelating power, with IC 50 values, 368.12 μg/ ml where as that of standard EDTA was 26.7 μg/ml. The IC 50 values for 2, 2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid radical scavenging was 222 μg/ml where as that of standard ascorbic acid was 22.6 μg/ml. The NO scavenging activity of the extract of the leaves showed IC 50 value of 815.6 μg/ml; at the same time the standard BHA had 49.1 μg/ml. All the plant extracts provided DNA damage protection; however, the protection provided at the dose of 8 μg/ml was comparable to that of standard gallic acid. The Coriandrum sativum leaf extract was able to prevent in vitro lipid peroxidation with IC 50 values; 589.6 μg/ml where as that of standard BHA was 16.3 μg/ml. Our results also showed significant ferric reducing power indicating the hydrogen donating ability of the extract. This study indicated the potential of the leaf extract as a source of natural antioxidants or nutraceuticals that could be of use in food industry with potential application to reduce oxidative stress in living system.

Freshly harvested loquat fruit were pretreated with 50 nl/L 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) for 24 h at 208C and then stored at 18C for 35 days to investigate the effect of 1-MCP on fruit nutritive and functional properties. The results show that 1-MCP-treated fruit exhibit a lower incidence of decay and higher levels of total soluble solids, total titratable acidity, fructose, glucose, sucrose, malic and lactic acids, total phenolics and total flavonoids than control fruit during storage. The 1-MCP treatment also maintains higher antioxidant activity as measured by the scavenging capacity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and superoxide radicals, and by the reducing power test compared with the control. These results suggest that 1-MCP treatment can improve the nutritive and functional properties of harvested loquat fruit, thus providing a high content in health-beneficial compounds to consumers.
