Meng, et al.: Evaluation of DPPH Free Radical Scavenging Activity of Ligularia fischeriA comparison study of the antioxidative activities was conducted in vitro on the different extracts from the different origins, harvest seasons, solvents and plant parts of Ligularia fischeri grown in Shaanxi. Different parts of L. fischeri, such as roots and rhizomes, stems, leaves, scapes and fruits, were extracted by an ultrasonicassisted extraction method with water, 95% ethanol, n-butanol, ethyl acetate and chloroform, respectively. Diphenyl picryl hydrazyl method was used to evaluate the antioxidative activities of these extracts. The result of antioxidative study showed that L. fischeri picked in September showed higher activities than that those picked in October. The extracts of L. fischeri from different solvents presented different free radical scavenging activities: water>95% ethanol>n-butanol>ethyl acetate>chloroform. The different herbal parts also showed the different antioxidative activities. The present work will provide a reference for the further research and exploitation of L. fischeri. It is consumed as an important wild vegetable in Korea [1] and Jilin Province of China [2] , and also the area of cultivation has increased gradually year by year. With the function of analgesia and cough expectorant, it has also been used for the treatment of traumatic injury, lumbocrural pain, whooping cough and other diseases [3] . The herbs, whose medicinal part is normally regarded as roots and rhizomes, are mainly distributed in Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Hubei, Henan, Anhui, Zhejiang and northeast of China. In Shaanxi province, it was harvested in the Qinling and Daba Mountain [4,5] .Free radicals, which are produced by the chemical reaction of organic compounds, could damage the body's tissues and cells, leading to human aging and causing a variety of diseases. Wild edible plants (WEPs) have long been recommended as a functional food and played a vital role in meeting food and nutritional needs, as well as improving the health of underprivileged communities in many rural areas around the world. This study aims to investigate the dietary value, micronutrients, and toxicological status of five WEPs such as Herpetospermum pedunculosum, Coix lacryma-jobi, Sonchus asper, Plukenetia corniculata, and Streptolirion volubile, consumed by indigenous people in Meghalaya, India. All of the plants included significant amounts of protein (5.42-22.16%), carbohydrate (4.47-44.22%), minerals, and vitamins, all of which were measured according to WHO guidelines. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the collective proximate composition, vitamins, and minerals content to discriminate among the plants. The amounts of antinutrients and heavy metals in all plants are below lethal limits. Water extracts of all WEPs have been tested for haemolytic toxicity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity, ensuring that they are safe for human consumption. Therefore, the focus of this research is on the use of WEPs as a source of dietary supplements, which could lead to the commercialization of the product and, as a result, assess consumer perceptions of wild edible plants in India.

Introduction: The superoxide radical (O 2 -), hydroxyl radical (OH) are generated in physiochemical pathways. All biological systems have innate antioxidant defence mechanisms but these mechanisms can be inefficient due to poor diet intake, pollution, stress and chemicals etc. Therefore, it is imperative to consume antioxidants to shield cells from destruction by free radicals. Shilajatu is such a drugs of prime importance that has been advocated in the management of various ailments ranging from Diabetes to Immunomodulation and Antioxidant. Materials and Methods: The antioxidant potential of Shuddha Shilajatu along with impact of geography and processing media on it, was determined by using DPPH i.e. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl Free Radical Scavenging Assay. Test was performed at the wavelength of 517 nm using 1 cm optical path cuvette at room temperature. The ultraviolet spectrum of Shuddha Shilajatu and Ascorbic acid was performed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer at different concentrations. The experiment was carried out in triplicate. The result was compared with ascorbic acid as it was taken as standard control under the same conditions. The sample concentration at which initial absorbance of DPPH solution get lowered by 50% has been considered as the endpoint for evaluating the antioxidant potential. Results: It has been found that Shilajatu samples processed in Triphala kwatha have shown better antioxidant profile than water processed samples. Moreover, sample procured from Amritsar showed much better antioxidant activity in comparison to Shilajatu sample procured from Nepal. Conclusion: Processing media and geography significantly modulate the effect and activities of Shilajatu.
