Ageing is a dynamic and progressive process that is characterized by the occurrence of morphological, biochemical, functional and psychological changes in the organism. The aim of the present article is to provide updated concepts on oxidative stress, covering its importance in aging, as well as nutritional status and supplementation with antioxidants (substances that prevent or attenuate oxidation of oxidizable substrates, such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and deoxyribonucleic acid) in the geriatric population. Evidence suggests that there is an inverse relationship between oxidative stress and nutritional status in elderly individuals. Although an increase in oxidative stress in chronic diseases associated with aging has been proven, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, up to now there has been no consistent clinical evidence proving the efficiency of supplementation with antioxidants against oxidative stress. In this context, supplementation is not recommended. On the other hand, the elderly should be encouraged to eat antioxidant foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Maintaining a normal weight (body mass index between 23 and 28 Kg/m2) should also be stimulated.

Biocatalytic Fabrication of α-Glucan-Coated Porous Starch Granules by Amylolytic and Glucan-Synthesizing Enzymes as a Target-Specific Delivery Carrier

In this study, we created biocatalytically coated porous starch granules (PSGs) using amylosucrase from Neisseria polysaccharea to apply them as an encapsulant for target-specific delivery. Field-emission scanning electron and confocal laser scanning microscopic images showed that the PSGs were completely concealed by the α-glucan coating layer. This carbohydrate-based encapsulant displayed higher amount of resistant glucan contents due to the elongated chains of the glucan coating, resulting in lower digestibility of these PSGs in simulated digestive fluid systems. Among the various PSGs evaluated, the highest loading efficiency for the bioactive molecule crocin was observed with the β-amylase-induced PSGs (β-PSGs) that had the smallest nanosize pores. Furthermore, α-glucan-coated β-PSGs showed the highest capacity to preserve the loaded crocin when incubated in simulated digestive fluids. This suggests that the α-glucan-coated β-PSGs can potentially be used for the delayed release of the core material in the upper region of the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, this system can be potentially utilized as an effective carrier for colon-specific delivery, and the release of the bioactive compound can be triggered by beneficial intestinal microbiota.

Given its high ability to damage important cellular components (lipids, proteins and deoxyribonucleic acid), oxidative stress is now recognized as one of the most common mechanisms associated with development of a variety of diseases and natural events such as pregnancy. During reproduction period, there is a change in the pro-oxidant and antioxidant balance due to the body and circulation modifications that are inherent to the pregnancy process. The present paper discusses the role of oxidative stress on the reproduction process. More effective defense strategies are needed to decrease the deleterious effects of oxidative-stress-induced gestation. This approach could be achieved by antioxidant status alteration. Further clinical and experimental studies are needed for better understanding of oxidative stress mechanism and the impact of antioxidant supplementation on reproduction.
