Antioxidant Activities and Total Phenolic and Flavonoid Content Variations of Leaf Extracts of Laurus Nobilis L. From Morocco

Abstract: Objective: The present study was undertaken to determine antioxidant activity and total phenolic and flavonoid content of ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, and aqueous extracts of the leaves of Laurus nobilis L.Methods: Antioxidant properties were measured using three tests: Free radical scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), reduction of molybdate, and reducing (Fe3+/Fe2+) power. Total phenolic and flavonoid content was measured by Folin–Ciocalteu and rutin reagent, respectively.Resul… Show more

“…Methanolic extract of L. nobilis possessed effective reducing power in the study of Pacifico et al (2014), while in our research it was less potent comparing to acetonic extract. Water extract of Moroccan bay leaves exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity comparing to other tested extracts, which was probably due to its high content of phenols (Taroq et al, 2018). Our results showed higher antioxidant activity of acetonic extracts than methanolic extracts.…”

“…In the case of bay leaves, the yield of acetonic extract of commercial sample (31.06%) was noticeable higher comparing to other samples. On the contrary, methanolic extracts of Moroccan bay leaves showed the highest yield (22%) comparing to other applied solvents (Taroq et al, 2018). Mandarin peel showed the highest yield in methanolic extracts of both commercial and naturally cultivated samples (23.07 and 23.77%) (Table 1).…”

“…The free radical scavenging activity of the extracts, in our case, could be attributed to the phenolic content. According to the literature, phenol compounds can contribute to the antioxidant potent 9,36,37 and they are considered as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-bacterial agents due to their antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties 38 .…”
