Antineoplastic Therapy Side Effects and Polypharmacy in Older Adults With Cancer

Abstract: The geriatric oncology population requires special consideration in rehabilitation care planning due to drug side effects and potential drug interactions that occur with cancer treatment. Antineoplastic therapies incite side effects that are frequently managed with additional pharmacological interventions, often resulting in a cascade of drug side effects. Moreover, this population is disproportionately affected by multiple pre-existing co-morbidities that require the use of multiple medications. The aggregate… Show more

“…Frailty is also an important consideration regarding participant composition in the included studies given that more than half of older adults with cancer experience frailty or prefrail states, 68 but only a single study included in our review measured frailty 43 . Older adults with cancer are amongst the most at‐risk for side‐effects or deleterious impacts from treatment, 69 given that more than half are frail or pre‐frail at time of diagnosis 70,71 . Because of this increased risk of treatment toxicity, 72 future interventions targeting self‐management amongst populations experiencing frailty would target a crucial unmet need.…”

“…Most of the chemotherapeutic drugs, with very few exceptions, are highly reactive and unselective compounds that target both normal and cancer cells. While normal cells are capable of fixing the damage eventually created by chemotherapeutics, cancer cells are not, thus making them more susceptible to the cytotoxicity [7,8].…”

“…It has been estimated that, especially, 40% of individuals aged over 65 years will have cancers [ 82 ]. In addition, it is known that the adverse effects of anticancer therapies increased with aging [ 83 ].…”
