Antimutagenic Effect ofHibiscus sabdariffaL. Aqueous Extract on Rats Treated with Monosodium Glutamate

Abstract: Hibiscus sabdariffa L. is a plant of the Malvaceae family, commonly known as roselle. H. sabdariffa is known to contain antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering, antiobesity, insulin resistance reduction, antihypertensive, and skin cancer chemopreventive properties. This study evaluated the effects of H. sabdariffa aqueous extract against cyclophosphamide (CPA, 25 mg/Kg) induced damage to DNA in male Wistar rats by micronucleus test. Samples of H. sabdariffa calyx were obtained in the municipality of Barra do Garças,… Show more

“…In another study the effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa aqueous extract had been evaluated against cyclophosmsmide (CPA) on male Wistar rats treated with monosodium glutamate. The group treated with the aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa revealed a 91% reduction in micronucleus frequency when compared with the positive control group and it is a potential candidate as a chemopreventive agent against carcinogenesis [72].…”

“…The investigation for the anticancer potential of the Hibiscus sabdariffa plant began roughly in the last decade that emerged with encouraging results [63][64][65][66][67][68][69]. Both crude extracts and pure compounds of the plant were reported to induce chemoprevention, selective cytotoxicity, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, autophagy and antimetastatis effects in various types of human cancer cells.…”

“…(e) The aqueous extracts have been the most studied so far, and this is where the genoprotective effect of some phenolic and flavonoid acids of jamaica has been achieved. With the purpose to determine the antimutagenic potential of an aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L., Brazilian researchers (2016) [8] conducted an in vivo study. They used Wistar rats that were treated with the extract (400 mg/kg) for 15 days and subsequently a single dose of cyclophosphamide (25 mg/kg).…”

“…Aqueous extract of calyx of H. sabdariffa showed chemoprotective effects in cyclophosphamide- induced DNA damage in male Wistar rats, thus indicating anti-mutagenic activity against chemical (cyclophosphamide)- induced carcinogenesis [ 169 ].…”
