Antimicrobial susceptibility of clinical isolates of non-jejuni/coli campylobacters and arcobacters from Belgium

Abstract: Fluoroquinolones should be considered in the treatment of severe C. upsaliensis and A. butzleri infection. When clinically indicated, erythromycin remains the first choice for the treatment of intestinal campylobacteriosis caused by C. concisus and C. fetus.

“…The MICs of antibiotics against the C. upsaliensis strain are shown in Table 1. Antibiotic agents like penicillins, cephalosporins, and macrolides, including AZM, showed low MICs, consistent with previous reports (3)(4)(5). On the other hand, the MIC of fluoroquinolone (levofloxacin) was Ͼ8 g/ml, indicating resistance to fluoroquinolone, as seen in a previous report (4).…”

“…However, 100% isolates were resistant to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin and sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Susceptibility tests for campylobacter species are not standardized (there is no recommendation by the CLSI), so there are variabilities in the susceptibility reported (Vandenberg et al, 2006). However, we used disk diffusion method for the susceptibility testing of C. jejuni and C. coli strains used in this study followed by determination of MIC of the intermediately resistant and resistant strains by agar dilution method (Luangtongkum et al, 2007).…”

“…However, susceptibility to oxytetracycline and erythromycin was detected in the same investigation in contrast to our study. In the study of Vandenberg et al (2006), 78.7% of the A. butzleri isolates were found to be susceptible to ampicillin and erythromycin, and all (100%) were susceptible to tetracycline. In the studies of Atabay and Aydin (2001) on samples from broiler chickens, and of Kabeya et al (2004) on beef, pork and chicken meat in Japan, the Arcobacter spp.…”

“…The presence of Arcobacter spp. has been demonstrated in foods of animal origin, various animal faeces (such as cattle, sheep, dog, rabbit, chicken), the environment and water in many studies (Kabeya et al 2003;Van Driessche et al 2003;Vandenberg et al 2006;Houf et al 2008;De Smet et al 2011;Shah et al 2011;Noh et al 2012;Suelam 2012). In their study, Figueras et al (2012) increased the number of currently characterised Arcobacter spp.…”
