Antimicrobial Susceptibilities of Shiga Toxin‐Producing Escherichia coli Isolates from Pigs with Edema Disease in Japan

Abstract: Fifty‐seven Shiga toxin‐producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains isolated from pigs with edema disease (ED) from 1997 to 2001 in Japan were examined for antimicrobial susceptibilities. The susceptibilities were compared with those of E. coli ATCC 23546 isolated from pig with ED in the 1950's. Consequently, the isolated STECs showed high susceptibility to peptides and bicozamycin in a way similar to the reference strain. On the other hand, the STECs showed low susceptibility to beta‐lactams, tetracyclines, nov… Show more

“…Inclusion of antibiotics 285 in media has been shown to inhibit certain serotypes (Uemura et al, 2003;Vimont et al, 286 2007a), and strains within serotype. Based on the minimum concentration needed to detect all 287 seven serogroup in spiked feces, EC broth was considered to be the best, which agrees with the 288 results of Vimont et al (2007b).…”

“…These strains were isolated from pigs with ED in 1999 and 2001, respectively [19]. We also used E. coli ATCC 23546, which was the O139 ETEEC reference strain isolated from pigs with ED in the 1950s [3].…”

“…Nowadays, the occurrence of ED has been increasing rapidly in Japan [25,26]. However, the etiology of this disease remains unknown, and its control is difficult [22]. Antimicrobial therapy is used as a major curative treatment for piglets with ED.…”

“…Antimicrobial therapy is used as a major curative treatment for piglets with ED. However, the use of antimicrobials has resulted in the development of antimicrobialresistant STEC on Japanese farms [8,22]. Furthermore, the use of some antimicrobials, such as ampicillin and fosfomycin, is a possible cause for the aggravation of ED symptoms [23].…”
