Antimicrobial Properties of Diamond-Like Carbon/Silver Nanocomposite Thin Films Deposited on Textiles: Towards Smart Bandages

Abstract: In the current work, a new antibacterial bandage was proposed where diamond-like carbon with silver nanoparticle (DLC:Ag)-coated synthetic silk tissue was used as a building block. The DLC:Ag structure, the dimensions of nanoparticles, the silver concentration and the silver ion release were studied systematically employing scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy, respectively. Antimicrobial properties were investigated using microbiological tests (… Show more

“…The surface chemistry of DLC coatings can be controlled by integrating selective dopants (e.g., F, N, Si, B) that enhance a specific property (e.g., bioactivity, corrosion) [ 165 , 166 , 167 ]. Remarkably, dopants give a possibility to manufacture coatings that have high antibacterial activity and favorable interaction with human cells.…”

“…Adding diamond nanoparticles per se did not significantly increase the antibacterial activity of chitosan/bacterial nanocellulose composites [62]. This activity can be further enhanced, e.g., by adding silver nanoparticles [160]. Nanocellulose/nanodiamond composites can also act as a suitable platform for drug delivery.…”
