Antimicrobial properties and dental pulp stem cell cytotoxicity using carboxymethyl cellulose-silver nanoparticles deposited on titanium plates

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the antimicrobial properties and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) cytotoxicity of synthesized carboxymethyl cellulose-silver nanoparticles impregnated on titanium plates. Material and methods: The antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles in a carboxymethyl cellulose matrix impregnated on titanium plates (Ti-AgNPs) in three concentrations: 16%, 50% and 100% was determined by adding these to bacterial cultures of Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. The Ti-AgNPs cytotoxicit… Show more

“…We previously reported on the ability of green synthesized CMC-AgNPs composites to inhibit the proliferation of Gram-positive and negative bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, respectively, with a suitable cytotoxicity [20]. Nonetheless, currently, experimental evidence regarding the role of molecular structure of polysaccharides as CMC on the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of AgNPs-based composites does not exists.…”

“…After 24 hours of incubation, the medium was removed, and the cells were washed 3 times with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The cytotoxicity assay was performed as described by Larsson and Nygren (15, 16). Briefly, fluorescein diacetate (FDA; Sigma-Aldrich) was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO; Sigma-Aldrich) and kept frozen at -20°C as a stock solution (10 mg/mL).…”

“…Further, the commercial availability of the electrochemical silver incorporation into AAO layers for antibacterial packaging products was demonstrated by Ikeda et al 57 These apparent bactericide properties have inspired the recent intensive research activities regarding the preparation of silver containing composite films. Thus, silver presence in biopolymers, [58][59][60][61][62] graphene oxide, 63 zeolites and zirconium phosphate silicate 64 is already reported.…”
