Antimicrobial polyurethane foams having cationic ammonium groups

Abstract: Polyurethane foams were prepared by using functional quaternary ammonium monomers to endow the porous materials with antimicrobial properties. For this purpose, tri‐ and tetra‐hydroxyl functional quaternary ammonium compounds were synthesized and used as a triol and tetraol monomer in a polyurethane foam formulation. By this method, the cationic ammonium group is chemically incorporated into the polyurethane backbone. Polyurethane foams containing different amounts of the quaternary ammonium functional group w… Show more

“…The popularity of PUs, PU blends, and polyurethane nanocomposites (PNCs) is due to the fact that they are versatile polymer materials with a number of applications in many industrial and biomedical fields. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Due to the versatility of their properties, there has been a continuous effort for the development of green and sustainable products based on PUs. 6 The areas of application of these materials are numerous and wide ranging and include medical, automotive, furniture and bedding, electronics, building, construction, and footwear industries.…”

They are usually made through the reaction of a diol (or polyol) and a diisocyanate (or polyisocyanate) in the presence of a catalyst.…”

“…30 For these reasons, QACs graed polyurethanes have been attracting a lot of interest because of its application in antibacterial materials. [31][32][33][34] Generally, the antibacterial polymer was evenly distributed in the bulk and on the surface of a material, but antibacterial activity is linked to surface properties. The antibacterial moieties in bulk not only impact material performance but also weaken surface antibacterial activity.…”

“…As presented by Sendijarevic et al ., the impact of replacing polyether polyol with different levels of a palm olein‐based natural oil polyol is systematically correlated with the changes in foaming reactivity, cell structure, physico‐mechanical properties, and morphology of highly resilient polyurethane foams. This section is completed by a contribution of Mecerreyes et al ., who developed antimicrobial polyurethane foams featuring cationic ammonium groups by using functional quaternary triol and tetraol ammonium monomers, ultimately showing that polyurethane foams containing more than 20% of quaternary ammonium component display high antimicrobial activity.…”
