Antimicrobial assay of endophytic fungi from Rumex madaio and chemical study of strain R1

Abstract: In order to search more antimicrobial natural products for new drug discovery, bioassay and chemical investigation of endophytic strains from Rumex madaio were carried out. Six fungal strains (numbered as L1, L6, L9, L10, R1, R2) were successfully isolated and their antimicrobial effects on three human pathogens, Escherichia coli, Staphyloccocus aureus and Candida albicans, were evaluated. The results indicated that ethyl acetate extracts of fermentation broth of these strains had no potent antimicorbial activ… Show more

“…The endophytic strain R1 was isolated and purified from the coastal plant Rumex madaio Makino, collected off Putuo Island (Zhoushan, China) [43]. A suspension of culture containing its mycelia in PDA supplemented with glycerol (20% v/v) was stored at −80 • C at Zhejiang University of Technology (Hangzhou, China).…”

“…Endophytes are also known to possess the ability to produce metabolites similar to those of their host plants, exhibiting comparable bioactivity. Since the isolation of endophytic fungus producing paclitaxel from Taxus brevifolia by Stierle in 1993 [ 14 ], numerous NPs with potent bioactivities have been discovered [ 15 17 ], fueling global interest among researchers in exploring bioactive substances derived from endophytic microorganisms and positioning it as a leading area of innovation in drug development.…”

“…Among 16 fungal strains isolated from the Erigeron canadensis, the ethyl acetate extract of strains NPR003 and NPR005 showed the strongest antifungal inhibitory effects (Bai et al, 2017). Bai et al (2019) isolated six endophytic fungal strains from Rumexmadaio, strains L1 and R1 belonged to the Colletotrichum and Fusarium genera respectively had stronger inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, and the R1 isolate was the source of two known antimicrobial agents dibutylphthalate and beauvericin. Another known metabolite named resorcinol type of lipid (compound 1) was purified from extract of the endophytic fungus Chaetomium cupreum isolated from the ornamental plant Mussaenda luteola.…”
