Antibacterial agents derived from conventional organic compounds have traditionally been employed as a biofilm protective coating for many years. These agents, on the other hand, often include toxic components that are potentially hazardous to humans. Multiple approaches have been investigated over the last two decades, including the use of various metallic and oxide materials, in order to produce a diverse variety of usable coating layers. When it comes to material coating approaches, the cold spray technique, which is a solid-state method that works well with nanopowders, has shown superior performance. Its capacity to produce unique material coating in ways that are not possible with other thermal methods is the primary reason for its importance in contemporary production. The present work has been addressed in part to explore the possibility of employing mechanically alloyed Cu50(Ti50−xNix)x; x = 10, 20, 30, and 40 at.% metallic glass powders, for producing an antibiofilm/SUS304 surface protective coating, using the cold spray approach. In this study, elemental Cu, Ti, and Ni powders were low-energy ball milled for 100 h to fabricate metallic glassy powders with different Ni contents. The as-prepared metallic glassy powders were utilized to coat SUS304 sheets, using the cold spraying process. With high nanohardness values, the as-fabricated coating material, in particular Cu50Ti20Ni30, demonstrated remarkable performance in comparison to other materials in its class. Furthermore, it displayed excellent wear resistance while maintaining a low coefficient of friction, with values ranging from 0.32 to 0.45 in the tested range. E. coli biofilms were formed on 20 mm2 SUS304 sheet coated coupons, which had been injected with 1.5 108 CFU mL−1 of the bacterium. With the use of nanocrystalline Cu-based powders, it is feasible to achieve considerable biofilm inhibition, which is a practical strategy for accomplishing the suppression of biofilm formation.

Over recent years, the ‘green’ chemistry approach to synthesizing nanoparticles has made significant developments. Because of their unique features, nanoparticles have received a lot of attention. The use of a bioflocculant to promote the environmentally friendly synthesis of copper nanoparticles is described in this paper. Copper nanoparticles were biosynthesized using bioflocculant which was produced from a yeast, Pichia kudriavzevii. The chemical reduction approach was used to synthesize copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) using a bioflocculant as a capping agent. Characterization of the as-synthesized copper nanoparticles was conducted using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The FT-IR spectra revealed characteristic peaks at 3267, 2956, 1656, 1059, and 511 cm−1 for the bioflocculant, while for the bioflocculant passivated CuNPs, the characteristic peaks were at 3482 (-OH), 3261, 1640, 1059, 580, and 519 cm−1 (Cu-O). These peaks revealed that functional groups such as hydroxyls, amines, and copper oxide bonds were present. The UV-Vis analysis showed surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at an absorbance range of 500–600 nm, with peak maxima at 555 and 575 nm for the as-synthesized CuNPs. The XRD pattern revealed planes such as (200) and (220) at 2θ = 43 and 52°, and the particle size (30 nm) was determined by the Debye–Scherrer equation. The transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed a spherical-shaped particle with an average size of 20 nm. The EDX analysis of the as-synthesized CuNPs revealed the presence of the element Cu, which was not present in the EDX image of the bioflocculant used in the synthesis of the CuNPs; this indicated the success of biosynthesis.

Abstract: Aim: The present bibliometric analysis was conducted to find the evidence regarding microbial corrosion in dentistry since corrosion by whatever means affect the intraoral performance of the metallic appliances. Materials and methods: Material and methods: Dimensions software was used to search for published literature pertaining to the keywords “microbial corrosion” AND “dentistry”. Two reviewers assessed the articles in terms of year of publication, authors, country of origin, journal of publication, and the affiliated institutions of the authors as well as their collaborations and the most cited publications. Results: The search revealed a total of 3,118 articles between the years 2000 to 2022. The number of publications was on the rising pattern with a spike between 2004-2007, again with a small spike between 2014 and 2016 and then a steep increase from 2017 onwards. The publications were almost equally split between Engineering science and Medical Sciences. United States topped the list of countries with 378 documents with total link strength of 106224. Sao Paulo University topped the list in terms of organizations with total link strength of 12722. The journal of Anatomia Histologia Embryologia topped with 136 publications followed by Materials with 94 publications. Valentim from Brazil topped the authors with 22 publications. Conclusion: Microbial corrosion is needs equal concentration as any other forms of intraoral corrosion given that oral cavity is loaded with huge varieties of microorganisms with some of them known to cause microbial corrosion like sulfate reducing bacteria. The recent decline in research and publications in this field especially in 2022 is concerning. More studies are needed to learn more on microbial corrosion and its effects in dentistry.
